Barbara Mikulski is an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Maryland from 1987 to 2017. She was the longest-serving woman in the history of the United States Congress and is the longest-serving senator in Maryland history. Mikulski was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of Christine Eleanor (née Kutz) and Stephen Mikulski. She is of Polish descent and her parents were both of Polish descent. She attended the Institute of Notre Dame, a Catholic all-girls high school in Baltimore, and graduated from Mount Saint Agnes College in 1958. She then attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where she earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in social work in 1965. Mikulski began her political career in 1971 when she was elected to the Baltimore City Council, where she served for five years. In 1976, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where she served for 10 years. In 1986, she was elected to the U.S. Senate, where she served for 30 years. During her time in the Senate, Mikulski was a strong advocate for women's rights, civil rights, and economic justice. She was a leader in the fight for the passage of the Violence Against Women Act, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and the Affordable Care Act. She was also a strong advocate for the rights of the disabled, the elderly, and veterans. Mikulski retired from the Senate in 2017 and is currently a professor at Johns Hopkins University. She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
